Comments: The shower was designed for me by an architect when my shower-room was being created. It has a fold-down seat, and grab-rails at two different heights to make sitting and standing easier and safer. I am very satisfied with it.
How has it enhanced your quality of life: I am no longer able to get easily in or out of a bath, so a walk-in shower that is safe and comfortable makes all the difference.

Comments: The wet-floor shower arrangement is a boon to my wife - the disabled member of my family, though I'm no 'spring chicken' - and fortunately we have a large bathroom floor area to accommodate this. However, the installation, arranged and financed by my local council, and consisting of a very shallow shower-tray covered by the waterproof floor covering, has not been without fault: We recently had a flood of water from the shower into our kitchen below. The cause of this being because the floor covering had not been taken up the wall in the area of the recessed - and covered - shower tray. The wooden floorboards' flexing had opened up the injected sealant allowing water to flow through the resulting gap in the floor edge, through the ceiling plaster board and artexed finish, and down into the kitchen. These installations MUST be completely water tight! By taking the floor covering - unbroken - up the wall to a height of at least three inches wherever the area of the shower is bordered by a wall surface (usually on at least two sides), and by using a good waterproof adhesive to fix it to the wall, below tile level, a water-tight finish should be guaranteed . This is particularly important where wooden flooring exists! I suggest that ALL customers having this form of shower arrangement fitted should ensure that this type of design be adhered to by their contractor.
Also, our council contractor has fitted the least powerful electric shower unit of the Redring 'Expression' series. During the winter period the hot water output of this is well below 'hot', or is reduced to little better than a trickle. We had a power-shower fitted pre-the new arrangement which was supplied directly with water from our very efficient combination boiler.
We were advised on installation of the new system that the new waste-water take-off would not handle the quantity of waste delivered by a more powerful shower heater. The waste water outlet MUST be of a large enough capacity to allow water to drain if a more powerful shower is fitted! Apart from the cost of running an electrically powered shower heater of whatever output, a power shower fed directly from a combination boiler, if fitted, is far more efficient and pleasant to use in winter time.
How has it enhanced your quality of life: My wife is now able to shower in much more comfort: not having to attempt to get into a bath, but still being able to sit down is a boon to her. She is able to use the system for all of her ablutions be it to wash herself down or just to wash her hair. The shower area is fitted with several handrails which provide a good level of security and give her more confidence to move around under the shower which of course one must still be able to do. What is often forgotten I believe is that frequently these shower units are used by members of the family who are not disabled - in an older house, with one bathroom only, this will often be the case. Facilities should be designed into the system to allow these folk to use the shower facility as one would use it if designed for a household where disability is not the controlling factor; safely and without risk of flooding or damage of the homes' environment. This criteria is, in my opinion, often overlooked with potentially dreadful consequences, the young being more mobile and perhaps less aware of danger - or potential threat thereof - than us older and possibly disabled folk. Think on when you design or have a disability aid fitted to your property: are there young 'uns about...?
