Having a hearing loss can pose many difficulties in life, whether it be a strain or a burden to those with the hearing loss or those close to that person. This strain or burden can seriously affect quality of life and can cause massive personality changes, whilst also greatly affecting work performance and social interaction.
There are also many stigmas and issues attached to wearing and buying hearing aids typically including style, cost, denial, and commitment. We will endeavor to help you through these issues to ensure you get the service and support you deserve, and the product you can benefit from based on your lifestyle needs and affordability.
What’s new in Digital Hearing Aids?
Hearing aids have developed massively over the last 10 years with the onset of digital technology (i.e. using computer micro-chips to modify and process the sound signal to suit each persons needs) to allow us to treat almost any hearing loss including severe to profound deafness that was previously near impossible to improve upon.
Typically hearing aids are supplied as either in-the-ear (ITE) or behind-the-ear (BTE), with new ranges of both that are now almost invisible – the images to the right show typical examples of the new mini-BTE’s now being fitted for extra comfort, cosmetics and high performance. These hearing aids have a miniature speaker which sits in the ear canal to avoid resonant distortion that is typical with normal BTE’s as supplied by the NHS.
A whole array of new digital technology is also now available including:
Bluetooth hearing aids - these can be connected wirelessly to telephones, televisions and stereos to give extra clarity for those struggling with these devices (imagine hearing on the telephone directly through both hearing aids!). This technology is proving to be a boon for those people who rely on the telephone and the TV for their social interaction and daily enjoyment.
Frequency Shifting – This allows us to restore lost high frequency hearing (typically in hearing loss caused by ageing) by shifting them to audible lower frequencies. If you have used hearing aids before and have not been satisfied with the results then maybe this feature can offer you the help you have been looking for.
Binaural coordination – some hearing aids now talk to each other, so that when you change the volume or programme on one side the other side changes automatically! So no more problems when trying to find the loop program set on programme 4 whilst at the theatre.
Plus many other features that may help you - we cannot list them all!
What we can assure you of is that Help My Mobility are not committed to any one hearing aid dispensing company – we merely seek to find you the best and most affordable option for a local service with complete impartiality. If you are not happy with any recommended dispenser, we will endeavor to find an alternative.
All hearing aid dispensers are registered with the Hearing Aid Council.
All hearing aids are fitted with ongoing aftercare, a full money back guarantee, and 2 year manufacturer’s warranty.

Having your hearing impaired can pose many difficulties in normal life but with sophisticated hearing aids, life can be much improved. However, the main issues that come to the forefront are deciding upon which hearing aid to buy. Knowing whether the price is right for any hearing aid that you buy can be tricky as the features, sophistication, brand and style all effect the pricing. Another feature that affects prices is the intensity of sound amplification that is required to improve your hearing.
Most of the hearing aids are categorised on the basis of:
Completely in the canal hearing aids- These are least visible and are very small but do not suit those with severe hearing loss.
Behind the ear hearing aids – The ear unit fits inside the ear while the rest of the hearing piece goes behind the ear. This is one of the most commonly found hearing aids to date. Some of these variants come with twin microphones and you can adjust the directional sounds.
In the Ear hearing aids- These minute hearing aids are designed to completely fit inside the ear. The machinery for amplification is inbuilt inside the moulded unit.
Apart from these common hearing aids available, there are some specific hearing aids for related disabilities. These 2 special hearing aids are:
CROS and BiCROS hearing aids- These hearing aids are specifically for those who only have hearing loss in one ear. The CROS aid retains the sounds from the ear with no hearing and transmits those to the other ear, making it sound better.
Bone Conduction hearing aids- These hearing aids have been made specifically for those who are not able to wear normal hearing aids. These aids transmit the sound through the skull bone through intense vibrations that are picked up by the aids and transmitted.
