Before You Buy a Stair Lift
Consideration Before You Buy a Stair Lift
Straight or Curved Stairs
Stair lifts are available to fit both straight and curved stair cases. Straights are cheaper than curved as curved stair lifts usually have to be custom made.
Narrow Staircases
They can usually be made to fit narrow stair cases.
Weight Restriction
Different lifts will have a different weight restrictions – check before you buy.
Safety Sensors
Safety sensors are vital in the safety of the user and others in the household. The sensors will stop the stair lift from ascending or descending if they detect anything that may be in the way of the stair lift. Modern stair lifts come with up to 8 sensors.
Swivel Seats
Swivel seats are vital to ease exiting the stair lift especially when exiting upstairs. Upon arriving upstairs you can swivel the seat to exit on the landing rather then the top step.
Soft start – Soft Stop
A good quality stair lift will have soft start and soft stop. This is where the lift will start and stop smoothly, without a jolt.
The Ride
A smooth ride quality is vital to ensure comfort. It should be gentle and controlled.
DC Power
The stairlift should run of DC power, not directly off mains power. The lift has a power pack which automatically charges when resting, this will ensure a smooth ride, plus in the event of a power cut the stair lift can still be used.
Remote Control
A remote control is more than a luxury. If there is more than one person in the household then a remote control will enable users to call the stair lift either down or upstairs to use.
Controls
Consider the type of control. If you have problems using buttons then opt for a stair lift with a joystick. This will make using the stair lift much easier.
