Buying Second Hand Stair Lifts

We often receive questions from UK customers looking to buy or sell second hand stair lifts.

Buying Stair Lifts

There are now many ways to buy a second hand stair lifts in the UK and we have seen an increase in interest of online purchase due to auction sites such as eBay.

These sites often offer very cheap stair lifts that have been removed from a property and we have heard of prices from as little as £100. Many of the stairlifts we saw on offer are very old models, many of which are incomplete.

For many new home owners the removal and safe disposal of a stair lift is an unwanted inconvenience and selling to someone else makes perfect sense for them.

However many people we have spoken to have encountered problems with making what is very often an impulse purchase for themselves, friend or relative.

One of the main issues is getting someone to install the stair lift in the new home. We contacted a number of independent instillation companies who all said it is a difficult area.

Safety and liability is a key concern and a third party installer, especially with recent high profile accidents relating to poorly installed and maintained stair lifts. As an independent installer will not know the service history of an older second hand stair lift they will be unable to ensure its long term safe operation. Many older stair lifts can not be maintained due to lack of spare parts and service engineers, so its instillation is uneconomic, however cheap the initial purchase cost.

From the feedback we have received from the industry many believe it is only advisable only purchase a recent second hand stair lift from a recognised reseller who will be able to advise and quote for the removal, installation and long term maintenance. Some leading manufacturers now have specialist reseller departments that deal with the purchase and resale or recent second hand stair lifts.

Selling Stair Lifts

As highlighted above if you are selling an older stair lift it will often have little value as a second hand purchase. For older stair lifts it is often a case of finding the most economic method of removal and safe disposal. Should you have a recent stair lift it may be worth contacting specialists resale companies that will deal with the complete process.
