Mobility Scooter MOT Certificate

There has been a lot of press coverage recently about the use of mobility scooters and the fact that they do not require a valid MOT certificate, or even road tax or insurance.

Within the industry there have been discussions as to whether the government will amend legislation to apply MOT tests to the road legal mobility scooters. Some see this as a positive move, whilst others see it as a move to generate additional funds. No one can argue with the importance of having a safe road worthy scooter, but are MOT’s the best way of achieving this?

"I recently had my mobility scooter serviced and they found 5 potentially dangerous faults - annual MOT would have prevented this, I am for them."

ho hum here we go - a license to print money for the mobility trade !! - MOT' s ?? - heck most of the Muppets that sell scooters don’t want to know if anything go's wrong once they have your money - and the number of firms who CAN actually service a scooter ?? - hummm - not many - there ARE some who would do the job properly - but far and  few between methinks - and i have heard many tales of so called "servicing " that leaves everything to be desired !!

Also who would do this?? Garages?? - What do they know about the subject?? - Dealers?? "sorry sir if you did not buy it from us " and most would not want the expense of setting up properly equipped workshops - if indeed they have the knowledge in the first place - i had a 18 year old erk bounce up to me outside a shop claiming to be a "fully qualified engineer " - yea right - one look at his hands told me he had never wielded a spanner in his life

i do my own servicing - repairs and modifications - done to the same standards I did with my cars when i used to drive - I regularly check all components and sort out any problems before they become real problems - and it is not exactly rocket science - ok I know not every one is able or willing to do this

of more importance is sorting out the sharks in the industry - who over charge - don’t want to know if anything goes wrong - and don’t do repairs properly - then worry about MOT'S

there are only 2 people I trust to touch my machines - me and a very good dealer who IS  a fully qualified engineer AND  cares for his customers safety

and lord only knows what any tester would make of the machine i am currently building - the rule book has been thrown out the window - so what of specials eh ?? - "nah mate - it don’t look like any scooter i have ever seen "  - so it fails ?? .................... AND WHO  pray ( as a final point ) is going to "test " the testers ??

Another well thought out scheme ...

If government legislate to MOT mobility scooters it wont end there, you will end up having to pay for compulsory insurance and road or pavement tax.  It is enough that the government taxes on top of your taxes and stealth taxes are criminal.  We all disabled will end up in our four walls with no way to get around.
